Learning Classical Indian music has never been more accessible.

The Samā School of Music is an online and in-person academy that teaches the art of ancient Indian music in a way that's both approachable and inspiring. The school was first created in 2003 by world-renowned Qawwali artist Tahir Qawwal, founder of Fanna-fi-Allah, who wanted to share his love for this type of music with others.

In 2019, Tahir began collaborating with his beloved Amie Parvati, and the school became an international online resource for countless students who were inspired to learn the full array of techniques behind all genres of Indian and Pakistani music including Drupad, Khayal, Thumri, Ghazal, Tappa, Dadra, Kafi Bhajan Tarana, Qawwali, Kirtan, Geet and more.

Today, we are working on bringing these lessons to life in the form of video courses, to further the learning process for our students worldwide.

What is Samā?

The ancient Indian practice of Samā is a sacred, spiritual experience that aims to bring people closer together in their common pursuit of the Divine, no matter one's belief system, religion, or creed. Samā is the process of activating inner currents, using music to open your heart and connect with the Divine. It's a way of deepening one's relationship with oneself through improvisation and creativity.

Samā is derived from ancient Sanskrit, and in Urdu, it denotes a spiritual gathering. In the Sufi tradition, Art refers to self-expression and Samā refers to selfless expression. The school's mission has always been to bring people closer together through the art of music and samā, and this concept remains at its core today.

Based in Bali, we offer both short and long courses online. As the pandemic eases, we are introducing more in-person offerings, and we look forward to welcoming international students and teachers!
