Why would singing WITH others matter more than singing solo?

Oxytocin and social bonding. Oxytocin, sometimes called the bonding hormone, has been measured at elevated levels after group singing and chanting sessions in several small studies. It is the same hormone associated with trust, safety, and connection in other contexts. This tracks with something every kirtan leader already knows from experience: a room that chants together starts to trust each other faster than a room that does not sing.

Humming and the vagus nerve specifically. Humming produces measurable nasal nitric oxide and low-frequency vibration in the sinuses and throat, and several small studies (including work referenced by researchers looking at Bhramari pranayama, the humming bee breath) have measured vagal-adjacent markers shifting during sustained humming. Does this mean solo practice does not matter?
