What Singing Does to Your Nervous System: The Actual Studies

Ask any singer who has come out of a full-throated kirtan (call-and-response devotional chanting) session or a two-hour qawwali (Sufi devotional music) set what it felt like in their body, and you will hear some version of the same thing: looser jaw, slower breath, a kind of settled clarity that wasn't there an hour before. That report lines up with a growing, if still young, body of research into what singing does physiologically. Here is what the studies actually say, and where the honest limits are.
What Happens in the Body When You Sing?
Singing is, first, a breathing practice. Sustained phrases require slow, controlled exhalation, which is already known to influence the autonomic nervous system (the system that runs your heart rate, digestion, and stress response without conscious control). Layer melody, rhythm (taal, a rhythm cycle in Hindustani music), and often a group of other people breathing and phrasing together on top of that, and you have a practice that touches breath, sound, and social connection at once. Researchers studying singing tend to look at a cluster of measurable markers: heart rate variability, cortisol (a stress hormone), oxytocin (a bonding hormone), and vagal tone, meaning activity in the vagus nerve, the long nerve that runs from the brainstem through the chest and abdomen and does much of the work of switching the body from "alert" to "rest."
Does Singing Activate the Vagus Nerve?
This is where a lot of the interest sits. The vagus nerve carries signals that slow the heart, ease digestion, and support what's called the parasympathetic nervous system, the "rest and digest" counterpart to the fight-or-flight sympathetic system. Singing involves slow, extended exhalation and controlled vibration in the throat and chest, both of which are physiologically plausible routes to vagal stimulation. Several small studies looking at singers, chanters, and hummers have found changes consistent with increased parasympathetic activity during and after singing. Researchers describe this as an association, not a proven mechanism in every case: the studies are often small, and vagal tone is hard to measure precisely outside a lab. Still, the direction of the findings is consistent enough that voice teachers and choir directors were reporting the calming effect long before physiologists started measuring it.
Can Singing Lower Cortisol and Stress?
A number of studies, including work published through PubMed Central (PMC), have measured salivary cortisol before and after choir rehearsals and singing sessions and found reductions, particularly after sessions involving group singing rather than solo practice. Other research has looked at singing in clinical and caregiving contexts, including studies with cancer patients, dementia caregivers, and people managing chronic stress, generally finding that group singing sessions are associated with lower reported stress and, in some studies, lower cortisol readings afterward. The honest caveat: cortisol is a noisy marker, sample sizes in this field are often small, and "associated with lower cortisol after a session" is a long way from "reduces your baseline stress permanently." What the research supports is a real, short-term calming effect that shows up often enough to take seriously.
What Does Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Have to Do With Singing?
HRV, the variation in time between heartbeats, is one of the more respected markers of nervous system flexibility: higher HRV generally correlates with a nervous system that can shift states well, while chronically low HRV is linked with stress and poor recovery. Several studies on singers, including choral research out of Sweden, have found that HRV rises and falls in time with musical phrasing, meaning the heart rate itself tracks the breath pattern built into a melody's phrase length. One widely cited study on Swedish choir singers found that when a group sang the same phrases together, their heart rates began moving in similar patterns, essentially syncing up over the course of a rehearsal. That kind of physiological synchrony between people is unusual outside of singing and a handful of other rhythmic group activities, and it is part of why researchers are increasingly interested in group singing specifically, not just singing as a solo act.
Why Does Group Singing Feel Different From Singing Alone?
This heart-rate synchrony research points at something singers already sense: singing in a room with other people is a different experience, physiologically and emotionally, than singing to a recording or a screen. International research groups such as the SingWell project, a multi-university initiative studying singing for health across the lifespan, have been building a more rigorous evidence base around this, looking at everything from breath control in people with respiratory conditions to social bonding in community choirs. The oxytocin research fits here too: studies on group singing (as distinct from solitary singing) have found oxytocin increases more reliably in ensemble settings, which tracks with oxytocin's known role in social bonding and trust. This is one reason this tradition was never designed to be learned or practiced alone. The guru-shishya parampara (the unbroken master-to-student teaching lineage) that carries Hindustani and qawwali music forward has always assumed a room full of people singing, listening, and responding to each other, not a single voice in isolation.
What About Humming and Bhramari?
Bhramari (a humming practice, its name drawn from the Sanskrit word for a black bee, for the buzzing sound it produces) has drawn particular research interest because humming is simple to isolate and measure. A small but frequently cited line of research found that humming dramatically increases nasal nitric oxide levels compared to normal breathing, and nitric oxide plays a role in vascular and respiratory function. Other small studies on Bhramari and similar humming practices report increases in measures associated with parasympathetic activity and reductions in self-reported anxiety after short sessions. These studies tend to involve small groups of participants and short time frames, so read them as suggestive rather than conclusive, but they line up with what happens on the vagus nerve side: sustained vibration and slow exhalation both point toward calming, not activating, effects.
Does This Mean Singing Is a Cure or Treatment?
No, and it's worth saying plainly. Research suggests and associates; it does not promise or cure. Singing is not a replacement for medical or mental health treatment, and none of the studies above claim otherwise. What the growing body of research does support is that singing, especially sustained, breath-driven, communal singing, is associated with real, measurable shifts toward a calmer physiological state in the short term. That is a meaningfully different claim than "singing heals anxiety," and it's the honest one.

Put the research together with the structure of devotional singing traditions and a pattern emerges. Qawwali and kirtan are built on repetition, call-and-response, sustained group phrases, and long sessions, exactly the conditions under which researchers have found the strongest associations with vagal activation, HRV shifts, and heart-rate synchrony. None of this was designed as a wellness intervention.
